Surgical Tech Program Director

Direct the educational activities of the Sterile Processing and Surgical Technologist programs. Develop and manage the approved curriculum and design teaching schedules.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manage and administer the program, including planning, evaluation, budgeting, selection of faculty and staff, maintenance of accreditation, and commitment to strategies for professional development. 
  • Supervise the activities of the Sterile Processing/Surgical Technologist staff. Prepare teaching assignments. 
  • Determine, establish, and implement department goals. 
  • Review student success rates by class and implement plans to reduce student withdrawals. Meet with students to encourage them to pursue their goals and solve student issues. Maintain an 80% student success rate for all classes taught in the program. 
  • Monitor the department budget and expenditures. Make appropriate corrections and changes to maintain a profitable program. 
  • Coordinate and arrange for educational workshops and in-services for didactic and clinical faculty. Prepare didactic instruction to include course objectives. 
  • Maintain student grades in accordance with established policies. Prepare final grades at the end of each semester to update student records and transcripts. 
  • Evaluate the performance of students and make necessary provisions to meet learning needs. 
  • Coordinate the didactic and clinical components of the curriculum. 
  • Notify programmatic accrediting agencies of all program changes, expected and unexpected to ensure compliance.       Ensure appropriate submission of required fees and documentation. Prepare self-studies and annual reports.
  • Submit supporting documentation, graduation reports, licensing and certification results, and placement statistics for the program with the Director of Regulatory Affairs. 
  • Manage the departmentís assessment plan. 
  • Develop and maintain a functional curriculum according to approved design. Evaluate course content and review new texts. Collaborate with the education department in the design and implementation of the Sterile Processing/Surgical Technologist program. 
  • Maintain an adequate Advisory Board and conduct two Advisory Board meetings per year. 
  • Perform functions of a Sterile Processing/Surgical Technologist instructor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelorís degree from an academic institution accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Secretary of Education, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, or an otherwise recognized training entity (e.g., hospital-based program). Masterís degree preferred.
  • Graduation from a program in the field in which they teach, accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education, Council for Higher Education Accreditation, or an otherwise recognized training entity (e.g., hospital-based program) in the specialty field in which they teach.
  • Hold a credential in the surgical technology field from a nationally recognized and accredited credentialing agency.
  • Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential required through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying agencies (NCCA).
  • Three (3) years of operating room experience in the scrub role within the last five (5) years or (3) years teaching in the field of surgical technology prior to employment.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of documented experience as an instructor in a Surgical Technologist program.
  • Must hold current license, registration, certification, or other designations as required by local, state, or federal laws to work in the field.
  • Knowledge in curriculum design, program administration, evaluation, instruction and advising.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point and other computer skills.
